Everyday, I'm posting a message on Twitter. That message will serve as the first (in bold) sentence for short written posts I have below.
Instead of enjoying the various aspects of life, we are rushing through everything as if we’re in a race. At the end of the race, we look back and wonder what’s the rush.
Our society today promotes a very fast paced lifestyle. We are constantly chasing something or we’ll feel like we’re failing in life. As we chase the various things we believe will make us happy in life, we easily miss many other things life can offer. Many of these things, once we miss them, won’t ever appear again.
For instance, we might be late for work so we are running down the street to catch our bus. As we dart past other people, we won’t notice a flower growing in the cracks of the sidewalk. Here is an example of something defeating all odds to exist in a place that was never meant for a flower. Yet, we never even notice it and, possibly the next day, the flower is trampled.
Are we in a race? What is the rush for all of us? It’s true that we have limited time on Earth but we aren’t necessarily getting more done by rushing. We’ve all seen the quality of work we perform when we rush through things. Do we really want to live through life creating a legacy that’s been hastily put together?
In the later stages of our life, we look back and wonder what’s the rush. There were so many things we could have enjoyed when we still have youth but the opportunity came and went. We are filled with regrets as we realize too late the things we should’ve treasured and didn’t. By then, we can only kick ourselves for wasting one of the most precious resource we had, time.
_____
If we ever stop and ponder about our lives, we’d be wondering why we are living a fast paced life. Even if we are trying to win a race, it’s proven that a turtle can win as well.
In society, a fast paced life is becoming a norm. We are always rushing to get something done and technology makes it possible by making communication almost instant. In such a fast paced world, we no longer find the opportunity to slow down and take a breath. There is so much we miss because we are too busy focusing on the path leading to whatever task occupy our time.
If we ever do stop and ask ourselves why we are rushing, we’d never come up with a satisfactory answer. Chances are we are just following others who are doing the same. We don’t ever question the norm if everyone else does it. As a result, we hardly check if this is the sort of life we want until we finally retire. For most of us, this is probably not the lifestyle we wanted.
Even in the situation where we are trying to win a race, many of us have heard about the race between the turtle and the hare. We believe that speed alone will win us our race when all it does is both making us complacent once we get a “headstart” and burned out. Somewhere along the way, we do need a nap and that’s when the turtle passes us by.
Oftentimes, we aren’t even sure where the finish line is. We go through life without ever knowing what our destination is because we are so vague regarding where we want in life. Too many people eventually reach a finish line only to find that it’s nothing like what they imagined. Sadly, they spent so much energy and time rushing towards this not so happy ending.
_____
Is life a sprint or a marathon? That’s the question we must ask to determine how we should live our life. Too many of us never bothered figuring out the answer.
Some people say life is a sprint. We need to take advantage of the headstarts so we can get ahead of other people. The further ahead we are in life, the more successful we become. After all, no one likes to be at the back of the pack when they would rather be those who are will get to the finish line before everyone else.
Yet, we have to wonder about how different people’s lives are. Some begin with families that are rich while others are born into poverty. With such disparity, we would imagine that those born into fortune would always get further ahead. Surprisingly, that isn’t always the case as we’ve all heard stories of people going from rag to riches.
Meanwhile, other people believe life is a marathon. It’s not how fast we go but, rather, how far we can go in the same amounts of time. People can sprint at the start but, once they worn themselves out, their progress for the remainder of the marathon isn’t noticeable anymore. When we look at the long term, those training for a marathon will get further.
With life, we can never be sure what will happen. Various events can take place and we might realize that the life we’re so accustomed to is gone. We’ll be faced with numerous obstacles and challenges. As a result, we feel stress and pressure that forces us to look at the short term so we cannot always focus on the goals needed to complete a marathon.
_____
Some parts of life are sprints because, otherwise, we lack the urgency to get things done and believe that we have plenty of time in the long term.
There’s nothing wrong with believing that life is a marathon as opposed to a sprint. However, we generally make the mistake of lacking urgency in the things we must do. Most often, we take our youth for granted because we believe we have so much time left. We think that we can enjoy life now and accomplish a great feat afterwards before we enjoy retirement.
Time flows one way so we aren’t getting the time we wasted back. Neither will life give us a break since we’ll encounter events and problems we never anticipated. Maybe we found the love of our life, got married and needed to support a family. The pressure of supporting a family greatly limits our opportunities because losing our income affects more than ourselves.
We can never know how our future will be shaped so there’s no guarantee we’ll have all the time we need to make our dreams come true. There can be opportunities knocking on our door but our lack of ability and confidence only result in those opportunities being turned away forever. There’s nothing worse than getting a chance but unable to capitalize on it.
For parts of our life, we should see it as a sprint. This isn’t a sprint where we are facing other people. This is a sprint where we try to beat our last time. We must use our youth to further develop ourselves by being a better version than what we were yesterday. What other people accomplish in life should matter little to our development.
_____
We feel the urgency to work very hard in life to get what we want. Yet, we are often just making other people’s dreams come true as opposed to our own.
From a young age, we’re taught to work hard in life so we can make our dreams come true. No one can deny the importance of hard work since there are no replacements to it. Even luck can only take us so far and, more often than not, we won’t have luck by our side when we need it the most. Only things we control in our lives is how hard we are willing to work.
Sadly, too many people are making the mistake of making other people’s dreams come true. They work very hard in life but all their time and effort aren’t invested in their own hopes and dreams. They are just working to make a living and no one’s real hopes and dreams are mere survival when there are so many opportunities available to us.
One reason why we are helping other people is our mentality. We believe we have little control over our lives so we go with what we believe can work for us. When things don’t go our way, we see ourselves as a victims and hope the situation can improve for us eventually. Therefore, many people give up on their dreams and, instead, assist others who don’t share the same mentality.
There’s nothing wrong with helping other people since we get a good feeling when we feel like we’re playing in a role of improving other people’s lives as well. The only issue is that we get very little out of the situation since we look at the income we get in the short term. If we focus on the long term and gain numerous vital skills in the process, we’ll be in a position to one day pursue our own dream.
_____
When we are tired of our current situation, complaining won’t help change it. We need to invest time in actively changing it for the better and never stop until we succeed.
Far too many people hate their lives. They hate their situation where they dislike their job and find no satisfaction in their lives. A large majority of these people do little more than complain about their situation as if complaining and making excuses can improve everything in an instant. With life, things are never so simply and we don’t live in an ideal world either.
To bring real change, we must actively pursue it. It can start with something as small as changing our small habits. For example, we might wake up slightly earlier to make our own coffee as opposed to buy a cup at our local cafe. These small things can have a much larger impact than we can imagine so we shouldn’t underestimate them.
For those of us who complain we don’t have enough time, that’s never the case. Even if we have a 9 to 5 job, there are others parts of the day or weekends when we can do something that’s beneficial like attending a class to gain new skills. During our busy schedules, we get tired after a work week but, if we push through, we’d be amazed by how much we can accomplish during our free time.
Despite how much eagerness we have for change, there will be moments when we feel like giving up due to the lack of progress. We see ourselves doing something for possibly a few months and see no improvement. It’s during these moments that we mustn’t give up and know that, as long as we keep pushing, we’ll soon realize the amazing change we didn’t notice before.
_____
We must learn to treasure people who are there with us through our lows because, no matter how high we go, there’s no guarantee we won’t fall down again.
In life, we want to have the best friends who will be there through our highs and our lows. Yet, we must remember that we want to be those sort of people too. If we abandon people during their tough times, then we certainly don’t deserve people who we can count on regardless of the situation. By doing what’s right, we’ll attract the right people into our lives.
Why do we need these sort of friends? The world can be a cruel and unforgiving place at times. We might have made some mistakes along the way and, when some organization looks for a scapegoat, we are their first option. There’s simply no guarantees that, once we reach the upper echelon of society, we can stay there indefinitely without life throwing a curveball our way.
Nobody needs help when they are experiencing the highs in their life. It’s during the lows that we struggle to cope with. No one likes the feeling of being a failure. No one likes other people seeing them as a loser. Usually, things get from bad to worse since misfortunes happen in quick succession and give us little time to react.
Once we hit rock bottom, we feel like we took such a hit that we wonder if we can get up. Sometimes, we might not even want to get back up because we don’t want to relive the experience ever again. During these trying times, a good friend offering us his or her hand can be a difference between us lying there the rest of our lives and us getting back up to climb once again.
