Everyday, I'm posting a message on Twitter. That message will serve as the first (in bold) sentence for short written posts I have below.
Most people suffering from mental illnesses find themselves surrounded by a seemingly impregnable darkness but we can light up their world by small acts of kindness.
Mental illnesses are very complicated and, unlike physical illnesses, aren’t noticeable most times. Given how reliant we are on our sight, people who never experience mental illnesses find these illnesses a difficult concept to comprehend. With lack of understanding, a lot of people either don’t support those suffering or become very cruel towards people who clearly need help.
Our society therefore has stigma towards mental illnesses. Those who are suffering often cannot get help easily and, if they share their illness, are ridiculed and bullied. Eventually, they learned that it’s far better to keep quiet and fight their battles alone despite how badly the odds are stacked against them. The lonely battles take place in a very dark place that no word can properly describe.
Yet, these people don’t have to be alone. They aren’t the only ones fighting these gruesome battles but all those who suffer are too afraid to come out and speak their story. With few stories shared, mental illnesses appear as special cases as opposed to being a widespread problem affecting people of all ages, genders and any other ways we classify people.
That’s where we come in. We must help these people out and show that people care about them. Nothing is worse than feeling lonely and have no hope in a dark world. We don’t need to be the sun but we can certainly light candles to show them a path to escape their darkness into a brighter place. It all starts with showing them kindness and giving them the hope they desperately need.
_____
Until we overcome the mental illness stigma, people who are suffering cannot get the help they need. Yet, we cannot overcome it without working together.
The biggest challenge for those suffering mental illnesses is the stigma our society has towards mental health. This stigma creates a number of horrible assumptions that don’t apply to most mental illnesses and these assumptions make it so difficult for people to admit they have a serious problem and require help, whether professional or from family and friends.
We have no problem going to the doctors if we are physically ill. Other people also accept the fact that we cannot work under those conditions. While mental illnesses aren’t that different regarding their impact on a person’s health, some people actually believe that mental health just requires an adjustment of moods. Someone suffering from depression couldn’t just get over it by being more positive.
We have to keep fighting the stigma and we know we have won when people can seek help without being judged. When people can seek professional help for their mental health and be seen as no different to those seeing a physician, then mental illnesses will have less impact on society as a whole and fewer lives will be destroyed.
The road to this victory can be long and hard. While it’s recognized in many areas, the stigma still exists. We only need to look online to see people who struggle with their mental illnesses and lack a place to go. They all tell similar stories of feeling like they don’t belong in society where their illnesses become an enormous obstacle they often couldn’t overcome. If we work together towards fighting the stigma, a day will come when this won’t be the case any longer.
_____
Stories are powerful. If more stories about mental illnesses are shared, then the closer we are to making mental illnesses better understood.
Most people love good stories. They feel like they’re living a different lives from their own and doing things they never hoped to do in real life. As entertaining as good story books are, we have countless real life stories people haven’t read or heard about. If we can make these stories more accessible, our world can change in an incredible way.
We all know that there’s stigma with mental illnesses. People are often associating mental illnesses with what they see in movies, novels and the news. These three sources of media all thrive on drama so, naturally, they only tell the extreme cases to get more audience. Sadly, people are mistaking these extreme cases as the norm.
People must understood that the majority of people suffering from mental illnesses aren’t that different. They just have more struggles in life and are perfectly harmless. These people have stories that are touching because they are fighting two battles: one within against their illnesses and the other without against people who judge them too easily.
If we can get more of these people’s stories out, then we can start fighting back against the stereotypes. We can open people’s eyes and show them that mental illness can be harmless like a fever or as deadly as cancer. We must let them see ordinary people fighting challenges one couldn’t describe in words and how they are practically no different from anyone else.
_____
Struggles aren’t there to make you suffer. They’re there to make you stronger and better so you’ll be closer to your goals and dreams.
We will all experience struggles at some point in our life. It doesn’t matter if you were born into a rich household because life is complicated enough that money cannot solve everything. The difference between someone who succeeds in life and those who live a mediocre life is how a person views struggles and how he or she responds to it.
Contrary to many people’s beliefs, struggles don’t exist to make us suffer. It’s true that they make us very uncomfortable and ruin the plans we laid out for the next few years of our life. However, struggles help build character. They push us to the edge so we discover skills we never thought we had and qualities we never believed existed within us.
The new skills and qualities not only help us recover from the setbacks in life but also better prepare us for the obstacles between us and newer heights in life. This wouldn’t be possible if we stayed the same and cower from struggles. Some people claim they are content with life but they generally have regrets about life. They might have had a certain dream but, in the face of struggles, they backed away and lost their opportunity at it.
We shouldn’t cower in the face of struggles. We haven’t gotten through our lives without overcoming challenges. Sometimes, what we face appear overwhelming but, if we break it down into smaller pieces and tackle the smaller challenges one at a time, we’ll win small victories that will give us the momentum to push forward with little resistance. We cannot do so if we don’t even attempt to overcome the struggles from the very beginning though.
_____
We don’t achieve and maintain enormous success overnight. We do so by working hard every single day and build up our small successes bit by bit.
In our current digital age, it’s easy for us to see overnight success stories. As a result, so many people hope that they can also join those successful people by finding unexpected success. Yet, what isn’t shown with most of these stories is the hard work and perseverance that were invested into these successes and that tends to mislead many people.
Nothing great is ever accomplished without hard work. At least, nothing great that lasts long has. We heard of lottery winners but a large portion of them use up all of their money and have more debt than before. Most of us want success that lasts until our retirement at least. These sorts of successes don’t come easy and we must be willing to make plenty of sacrifices to make them come true.
Let’s take a professional athlete who wants to compete in the Olympics. During competition, the athlete seems to perform with ease and, despite the tough competition, beats out all competition to win the gold medal. What we don’t see is the hours upon hours of training this athlete must do every single day in the years leading up to the Olympics. No one expect this person to simply win gold without training at all outside competition.
We all have incredible potential within us so finding enormous success isn’t impossible. The issue lies in our mindset where we think that a bit of luck will get us where we want. Luck doesn’t normally happen for most of us so we need to create our own luck. By working hard and never giving up, we’ll eventually find opportunities that will get us closer to success. However, we must first fight and win the small battles because every single battle matters when it comes to achieving our dreams.
_____
We don’t lack the potential to achieve great things in life. We just lack the confidence in our ability to tap into that potential because we’ve been told too often we can’t.
We are all meant to accomplish great things because we possess the skills and qualities needed to find those successes. However, it takes time to unlock those skills and qualities. When we are too impatient and want instant gratification, we tend to rush things resulting in nothing accomplished and a sense of failure that adds up over time when we don’t get the outcomes we envisioned.
Even if we do train ourselves to be more patient, we are also dealing with critics who tell us that we cannot. We can have great dreams and, in due time, can make those dreams come true but there will always be people who put us down. They tell us to be practical or tell us that we are foolish to think we can do something incredible. Too often, we listen to these critics and don’t take the necessary first step.
The critics can be silenced and the best way is to silence them with our actions. What do these critics know? They don’t know the sort of lives we lived through. They don’t know why we are chasing those dreams. They only know they cannot accomplish something great and have the nerve to dictate what we can and cannot do. There will always be critics but we should see them as nothing more than people who talk too much and do too little.
We have everything we need within us. The first step is silencing the voices within us that tell us we cannot do it. The critics will remain vocal but, if we are focused on our dreams, even their voice won’t reach us. With enough hard work and perseverance, we’ll see the first sign of progress. Just as a sapling takes years, if not decades, to grow into a tree, our accomplishments will start small and grow to something incredible.
_____
Critics are everywhere and they’ll say anything to put you down. Don’t listen to them since they have nothing good to say. You will silence them with your actions and results.
We have encountered critics everywhere in our lives. They can be our family members, our teachers or complete strangers. The bigger our dream is, the more critics we’ll encounter on our journey. We can let their words bother us or we can ignore them. Most of the time, we have to wonder why we should listen to people who have time to criticize others.
It’s always easier to criticize other people. All you need is to find fault in others and express it. Yet, these faults are often exterior. Nobody else can see what’s within you so they are naturally a poor judge of what you can accomplish. Let’s not forget that, if these critics were busy chasing their dreams, they simply don’t have time to criticize others. In other words, these aren’t the people you want to be around anyways during your journey to your success.
As we move forward in the pursuit of our dreams, we must learn to not criticize others. Making a dream come true isn’t easy and it requires us to improve daily. Instead of finding faults in others, we should uncover what improvements we need to get further. Self-improvement is a slow and steady progress that requires a lot of discipline. Given how much time and effort we need to invest in it, we don’t have time to be critics.
All the successful people today had critics at the start and during their journey. Those critics are silenced now because these people proved with their actions and results. We can all reach that point as well since critics don’t stop us from reaching our dreams. Our lack of confidence in ourselves and lack of discipline in life are two key factors stopping us from being who we want to be.
