Everyday, I'm posting a message on Twitter. That message will serve as the first (in bold) sentence for short written posts I have below.
Before we find success, we must travel a long journey. See the journey as an adventure because it should be fun and exciting.
Too often, people are focused on their destination. They wonder how and when they’ll reach the destination. This sort of focus causes people to miss out on other things life can offer. Given how long the journey is before we reach our destination, people get really discouraged when they don’t see their destination getting any closer as though they made no progress whatsoever.
The most rewarding things about life are the journeys. Imagine reading a book and seeing yourself as the main protagonist. You don’t want to flip right to the end of the book to see what happens. You want to experience the events that will lead up to the climax because they add to your experience. Why should we live our lives any different from characters in a book?
We’ll have our ups and downs. We will encounter antagonists who are determined to stop us from reaching our dreams. We’ll develop over time so we’ll be stronger characters ready to take on whatever awaits us in the climax. We are the protagonists of our own book and, unlike the characters in books, we have control over our future. If we don’t like the ending we’re heading towards, we can certainly take another path leading to a different ending.
We like characters that make sacrifices, overcome numerous obstacles and get a happy ending. We can have our own happy endings as well but we must be willing to make sacrifices and overcome numerous obstacles. We can write out the future chapters to get ourselves closer to our dream. However, writing the chapters isn’t enough. Plenty of action is necessary to turn what we envisioned into reality.
_____
The destination gives us a direction in life while the journey is where all the amazing things in life happen to us. Even if we don’t reach the destination, the journey was well worth it.
We need directions in life or we’ll be wandering aimlessly. Nothing gets done because we are unsure what we want in life. That’s why we must have goals and dreams to help guide us towards the path we wish to take in life. Goals and dreams are wonderful but, too often, people are so obsessed with these that they don’t realize what they’re missing out on.
Life is a journey that takes us to a certain destination. We can choose what that destination is but we cannot skip the journey nor should we want to skip it. Unlike our commute to school or work, a lot of amazing things can happen to us on this journey. We can meet new people and see new things. We can experience things for the first time and realize that we have only seen a tiny portion of this world.
There’s such a big world out there but we are so focused on the things in our immediate vicinity. We can be obsessed of getting a very high mark at school or become the employee of the month at our workplace. This obsession might make us laser focused on our goals and dreams but it also makes us more vulnerable to setbacks and failures.
Those who care more about the journey learn more. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason. We are meant to listen more to what other people have to say and we’ll meet all sorts of people on our journey. Somewhere along the way, our destination might change as our eyes are opened more but the journey will remain similar as it brings us new opportunities through people and experiences.
_____
We have two ears and a mouth for a reason. Listen more to what others have to say and learn from what we hear.
From a young age, we generally like getting other people’s attention. We might get in trouble or we might be talented at something and love showing off. When we speak, we accomplish the same by getting the attention of others. Too often, we speak regardless if we have something worthwhile to say or not. As a result, we miss out on valuable wisdom that can be beneficial to us.
There are billions of people on Earth and we will only meet a tiny fraction of them. Within the tiny fraction, there are often many people who have seen and experienced more of this world. These people have wisdom that they might be willing to share with those who are willing to listen. If we are too busy speaking, they will simply pass us by without leaving any wisdom behind.
When we are young, we like to think we are well informed. The internet provides us with so much information that we feel as though all known knowledge is within our reach. However, there’s so much wisdom that cannot be shared on the internet. Watching someone on a video cannot replace being in the same room with that person. When we don’t experience something firsthand, we only gain a fraction of what a person or event has to offer.
We must learn to listen more often. We have two ears for that exact reason. We don’t always have to give our opinions on every single topic if there are others who are more qualified to share their thoughts and views. If we have something valuable to offer, we can be the last to speak. After all, something valuable remains valuable regardless of when we share it with others.
_____
Those sharing about their mental illnesses aren’t attention seekers. They are just calling for help and, at the very least, we should listen to show we care.
In our society, we have people who are attention seekers. These people will do anything to get attention and that includes the pretending of having mental illnesses. These people make light of a serious topic but it’s not exactly their fault. If society as a whole took mental illnesses more seriously, no one would joke about such a matter so easily. How many people do we know joke about having cancer?
It only takes a few bad apples to give the impression that all those who share about their mental illnesses are attention seekers. With the internet, it’s never easy to tell the difference between the attention seekers and the victims of mental illness. However, we should still listen because, for those suffering, nothing is worse than being ignored or treated poorly.
Sharing about one’s mental illness takes courage. There are brave souls out there taking the first step but incidents like being called attention seekers can be devastating. Instead of continuing seeking help to overcome their inner demons, they go back inside the walls they built within themselves. The inner demons thrive in these conditions because those people lack the tools to eventually win.
After suffering from mental illnesses ourselves, we understand the pain and suffering one goes through. Naturally, we want to help others in similar situations. When interacting with people online, we should at least listen to those people. Some of them might be attention seekers but most of them are searching for help. If each of us can help even a handful of those desperately needing help, we are making this world a better place.
_____
When we make excuses, we are shifting the blame from ourselves. Yet, that very action stops us from improving because we claim situations out of our control is the cause of our problems.
No one likes to be blamed for things that go wrong. Everyone likes the feeling of taking credit for things that go right. When things go wrong, most of us instinctively make up excuses. Excuses almost become second nature because we do it so often. What we fail to realize is that making excuses only hurts us and nobody else.
Some common excuses might be not having enough time or boss was terrible. The two examples seem to indicate that the situation was out of the person’s control. Nobody controls time and we have no way of changing a bad boss into a good boss. When we shift blame to other people or things, we don’t bear the responsibility on ourselves. As a result, we don’t search for the faults and flaws we need to change within ourselves.
None of us are perfect nor will any of us ever be perfect. That shouldn’t stop us from constantly improving ourselves in attitudes and habits. People who realize they must constantly improve are working hard every day and moving closer to their goals and dreams. For those who thrive on making excuses, they do nothing to change their situation and make new excuses when bad situations continue happening.
While it’s true that certain situations are beyond our control, we do dictate how we react to it. Let’s say we’re the head of a project and the project went poorly due to a member doing a terrible job. We, as the leader, get blamed for the failure. Instead of taking our frustration on the person who did a terrible job, we should instead see what we can do to avoid a similar repeat in the future. Instead of being stuck in the past, we should move to improve our future.
_____
We must be willing to take the blame for our mistakes because only then can we search for answers within ourselves where great potential can be tapped to make dreams a reality.
We all make mistakes in life so it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Yet, our society portrays it negatively by punishing us for making mistakes. At school, we get deducted marks for each mistake we make. At work, we can be fired for not being perfect at what we’re doing. As a result, we want to do everything in our power to avoid mistakes and, when mistakes do happen, we blame other people or events.
The thing about mistakes is that they are necessary for our growth. Mistakes happen for a number of reasons that are closely tied to us. We might do poorly on a test because we didn’t study enough or didn’t understand the concept fully. We make mistakes in relationships because we have yet to know the best approach to talking and interacting with other people.
Oftentimes, mistakes happen due our bad habits. We might procrastinate or do the bare minimum on an assignment or project. These habits won’t be apparent if things were going well since we’d be convinced that we’re doing something correctly. It’s when mistakes and the resulting consequences happen do we finally realize that something needs to change or we’ll be repeating the same mistake in life.
Essentially, we want to adapt good habits because those will help us tap into our inner potential. We all have great potential but the key to unlocking it takes some difficulty. Even talented people need a lot of hard work if they want to achieve their full potential. As more of our potential is achieved, we move a step closer to making our dreams a reality.
_____
Our future is determined by the habits we adopt. Good habits not only make us healthier overall but also help us take advantage of whatever opportunities that might cross our path.
Habits play a huge role in our lives. They determine how we respond to various situations. For example, procrastination is a bad habit a lot of people have. These people tend to wait until the last minute before they do tasks they were assigned. This tends to see lower quality work and more stress due to the accumulation of tasks over time.
We all know that we should adopt good habits because it’s, well, good for us. There are many good habits that are very healthy for us whether physically or mentally. However, good habits, like all good things in life, take hard work to acquire. We probably all noticed that good habits take far more effort to adopt than bad habits.
Luckily, we have control over what habits we want in our lives. We cannot say that other people have a say because we make the call on what sort of habits we want. If we’re tired of feeling unhealthy, we can start exercising regularly or eating healthier foods. If we find ourselves with not enough time to do what we love, we can sacrifice the time we normally sleep in with to pursue whatever we’re doing.
As we work to change all of our bad habits, we’ll notice a number of changes in ourselves. Most importantly, we’ll also take advantage of opportunities that appear in our lives. For instance, irregular sleep patterns make us sleepy most of the day. If we changed when we go to bed and when we get up, we’ll be more awake and notice the opportunities as soon as they show up.
