Everyday, I'm posting a message on Twitter. That message will serve as the first (in bold) sentence for short written posts I have below.
Nobody wants to have regrets because, by then, it’s too late to change anything. Instead of having regrets, we should take risks, do the things we always wanted and never look back.
One word people fear the most in their lives is regret. The older we become, the more we are afraid of regrets. When we lay on our deathbed, nothing bothers us more than the knowledge of all the things we didn’t do when we had the chance. We make plenty of choices all our life and, at times, these choices are simply inaction when it comes to a certain activity or even dreams.
When we are young, we feel no pressure because we feel like we have all the time in the world. Spending a few nights every week at parties shouldn’t be an issue. The only issue is that we have dreams that are big and don’t happen overnight. Those few precious nights each week can be the difference between our dream coming true and our dream never even getting started.
The longer we wait, the less likely our dream can come to fruition. After all, more responsibilities are on our shoulders as we get older. We might have started a family and have kids. Something happened in life and we must take care of a loved one. Our own health began suffering early on so we spend most of our days fighting the illness. Before we know it, our time is running out and we haven’t even taken the first step towards our dream.
The best approach to fighting regrets is to take risks. That doesn’t necessarily mean taking reckless risks but, rather, getting out of our comfort zone to do something different from the routines we’re so accustomed to. By pushing our comfort zone bit by bit, we get to do the things we always wanted and we are too busy to ever look back.
_____
One of our biggest regrets is the time we didn’t spend with our loved ones when we had the chance. No amount of money can get us a second chance in spending precious time with others.
We all have finite time on this world so we mustn’t take our time for granted. Time flows one way and, if a chance passes, we likely won’t get a second chance. Too often, we think we have plenty of time to spend with our loved ones once we finish doing what we’re striving for. Little do we know, time is steadily running out as sand trickles downwards in an hourglass.
We all have goals in life we want to achieve. When things are going our way, we want to keep the momentum going to accomplish greater feats in life. As we keep the momentum going, we can easily be blinded from what truly matters in our life. For example, our pursuit of our career might see us rarely at home spending time with our loved ones.
Life is unpredictable in that unexpected events can happen. All it takes is an unfortunate accident or one doctor’s visit for our lives to be changed forever. What initially appeared as limitless time suddenly has a limit and that limit is much shorter than what we thought was available. At this point, we struggle to make up for the time we weren’t there for a loved one but we never do make it up.
We must learn to treasure our time. While it’s important to invest some time in developing and improving ourselves, we must also find a balance with our loved ones. We can find success in our career and make plenty of money but the money won’t bring back the loved ones we lost and the time we could’ve spent with them.
_____
Why do we pursue a career? For money? For fame? For passion? Until we know the why and how this why affects us, we are basically wandering aimlessly in life with no destination.
From a young age, we’ve been told to pursue a career. Once we get into a career, we should be set in life. However, we fail to ask ourselves why we are doing this. What other people say doesn’t necessarily make it true, especially when our world is changing so rapidly. When we listen, we must also learn to process the information to see what works for us.
Are we pursuing a career for money? We need money to pay for the expenses we have in life. Nobody likes going broke because life gets very difficult then. Yet, pursuing money alone is a terrible mistake as well. How much money is considered enough? We can spend all our life making money but nobody can come up with a set amount that would satisfy their appetite as they desire more each time they hit their previous goal.
Fame sounds pretty good to have if a career can get us that. Many people want to be famous because they feel like they’re worth something in life. They want to be remembered by the generations to come instead of leaving the world as a nobody. What’s the price we pay for fame? Are we living our life when we pursue a career where other people’s opinions matter more than our own?
Too often, we’re told by others to avoid pursuing a career we’re passionate about. They equate passion with failure because those with passion are perceived as those making decisions with emotions. While using logic is important, we mustn’t underestimate how powerful passion is since it’s governed by instinct and instincts have proven our logic wrong on numerous occasions.
_____
When we build towards a brighter future, we must find a balance between logic and instinct. It’s amazing how our instinct can pick up things our logic fails to notice and change our lives.
We all want a brighter future and our dream to become a reality. We understand that hard work is necessary along with the right mindset. Yet, we are giving ourselves unnecessary challenges when we aren’t using all the tools available to us. Imagine going to work where you use a mouse but not a keyboard. You can make it work but you are making your life so much harder.
More often than not, we choose not to use our instincts during our decision making. In our society, we see instinct as an illogical way of decision making. It’s an emotion based method and we should avoid it because instincts originate from a part of our brain that went back to the days our ancestors relied solely on hunting for their meals. We see ourselves as evolved forms of humans so we shouldn’t use such a primitive part of our brain.
Yet, we have the moments when we said that we should’ve trusted our gut feeling. We saw something play out and regretted our changed decision earlier. All of us had those moments and, at times, we kick ourselves when we realize that, had we remain true with our original thought, our lives would be so different. If we have trusted our instincts then, our outcome can be so much more different.
We must realize that a balance between logic and instinct must be achieved. Our brain is capable of both so we should take advantage of all the tools available to us. Too much of either would see us walking down the path of failures while actively balancing both is often what we need to chart that brighter future we always envisioned.
_____
We desire a brighter future for ourselves but we mustn’t make the mistake of only dreaming about it. Dreams remain dreams until we decide to actively create it with our own two hands.
When we were young, we had moments where we dreamt about ourselves being someone else. We might be a singer performing before a large audience. We might be the player who scored the last minute goal to win the championship. Regardless of what dream we had, it stays a dream if we only imagined it in our head and do nothing else.
Even as we get older, we think about the things we want whether if it’s a promotion or a long vacation. We often think that such things might be out of our control because we underestimate what we are capable of. We have experienced more of life and, for a lot of us, we even lost the ability to dream. We think it’s foolish pursuing something so unrealistic after learning about the harshness of life.
Regardless of what age we’re at, we all possess the ability to change our situation. It’s true that change doesn’t happen instantly and we tend to get impatient. However, major changes in life, especially those life changing scenarios, are possible when we believe in it and work towards it with our own two hands. Nobody will give us the brighter future so we must built it ourselves one step at a time.
We often wonder when’s the best time to get started. There is no better time than the present when we are in control. It’s true that we’ll have situations that serve as obstacles. We have work that eats up a large portion of our days and other commitments. All we need is commitment towards our dream, even a few hours a day, and we’ll see change starting at a snail pace but picking up the longer we stay committed.
_____
Don’t spend your whole life learning about your purpose because you won’t have enough time to live your purpose and make the world a better place than the one you were born into.
Far too many people only realize their purpose late in their lives. They have been living their lives choosing all the safe routes. Regardless how much they are suffering, they are too terrified to do something out of the norm. As a result, they get through life never really figuring out their purpose. Only when they reflect on their regrets do they finally discover their purpose in life.
To live our life, we have to take some risks. We have to do things we are uncomfortable with because those will help us uncover who we are much sooner. Discomfort brings out qualities we never thought we possessed and those qualities can move us towards our dreams. If we remain in our comfort zone, then we are stuck being the same person we were months, years or even decades ago.
It’s easy for us to be convinced that we have no purpose in life. There are plenty of critics out there telling us that we are failures. They make us believe that we have nothing to offer to the world and, instead, we are just another nobody walking this planet. Know that those critics are hurting us because they need a way to justify their existence as they too don’t know their purpose in life.
Those with a purpose have no time to criticize others. They know time is precious and pursuing a dream or a number of dreams require all of their remaining time on this planet. They won’t stop to tell you that you’re a failure while they are busy learning from their mistakes. They probably don’t even notice you because they’re focused solely on the dream that gives their life meaning.
_____
Avoid negative thoughts that say your world is getting worse. Certain situations might make it look that way but we can always change the path we take so we end up at a better place.
Negative thoughts often tag along wherever we go and they actually ruin our day. They whisper doom and gloom even when there’s no way of justifying it. That’s how powerful negative thoughts can be and, sadly for most of us, they remain a powerful factor in our decision making. Whenever we doubt ourselves, it’s usually negativity at work.
Negativity becomes more powerful when terrible things happen to us. We might lose our job or drop out of school. Anything we associate with failure feeds negativity which does the “I told you so” moment. At these crucial moments, we must learn to not let negativity get the better of us. Even a broken clock gets the time right twice a day so negativity simply got lucky with its predictions.
Regardless of what situations we are in, we must remember that we are tough. We haven’t gotten this far in life with everything given to us. We fought for most of the things we wanted. We invested lots of sweat and hard work to get to our current stage. It might be discouraging losing the things we worked so hard for but our toughness will get us through so we can rebuild our life into a better one.
We must never let negativity tell us that we cannot change our future. We all have the power to and it’s a matter of believing in ourselves. We have overcome adversity we never thought we can. We even surprise ourselves at times with qualities we never thought we possess. We shouldn’t see challenges as suffering but, instead, tests given by life to unlock our inner potential.
